Why phone videos look worse than you expect
You film on a beautiful screen, and it looks great. Then you send it to a friend and it arrives soft and blocky. That is not your phone; it is what happens afterward. Messaging apps compress aggressively to save data. Social platforms re-encode. Cloud albums often make a lighter copy for streaming. Each step trades detail for size.
A secondary cause is the shooting conditions: dim rooms, digital zoom, a dirty lens, and a moving subject all strain a small sensor.
Settings worth changing
None of these cost anything:
- Shoot at 1080p 30 fps or 4K 30 fps. 4K at 60 fps creates huge files that apps squeeze harder.
- Clean the lens with a soft cloth. Fingerprint smears are the most common cause of dreamy, hazy video.
- Tap to focus and lock exposure on your subject.
- Avoid digital zoom. Move closer, or use the telephoto lens in good light only.
- Turn on video stabilisation, and hold the phone with both hands.
Settings at a glance
| Situation | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| General video | 1080p, 30 fps | Balanced size and quality |
| Sharp detail, editing later | 4K, 30 fps | More room to crop and stabilise |
| Low light | 1080p, 30 fps, extra light | Slower shutter, less noise |
| Sharing by chat | Send as file or link | Avoids recompression |
Share without wrecking it
The most helpful habit is to send files, not previews. On iPhone, use AirDrop or send as a link from iCloud. On Android, use a Drive or Photos link or Quick Share. For messaging apps, pick the "document" or "file" option where it exists, which sends the original untouched. For social posts, upload the 1080p file directly from your gallery rather than from a chat copy, and read our guides for iPhone, Android and Instagram and TikTok.
Already recorded and already degraded
You cannot go back and re-record a birthday. For these clips, upload the best copy you have to the box above. Phone footage is one of the best cases for our tool, since the source is usually high quality until a messaging app squeezes it. AI restoration rebuilds faces, edges and text, and the cleanup pass removes blocks and low-light grain.
Phone videos are generally short, which suits us well: clips up to two minutes receive the full AI treatment, at up to 1080p, with your sound unchanged.
Vertical clips stay vertical. We never crop or rotate, so a 9:16 story leaves in the same shape it arrived.
Accessories that actually help
You do not need much. A cheap clip-on tripod or a stack of books stops shake, which compression punishes. A microfibre cloth keeps the lens clean. A small LED light transforms a dim room. These three cost less than a coffee subscription and improve video more than any app.
If you shoot interviews, put the phone at eye level, close to the subject, with the light in front of them rather than behind.
A quick plan
Before filming: clean the lens, find light and choose 1080p or 4K at 30 fps. While filming: stay steady, lock focus, no digital zoom. After: share the original. For anything already damaged: use the fixer and compare the preview. If it is a screen recording rather than a camera clip, our page on fixing pixelated screen recordings covers that.
Editing without losing quality
Export at the same resolution you filmed, or higher, and choose a high bitrate. When an editor offers "automatic" quality, pick the highest preset. Always edit from the original camera file, not a copy from chat. These habits protect all the quality your phone captured.
