Remove blockiness from video

Those ugly squares in skies, shadows and skin are compression artefacts. They can be smoothed out, and often the detail underneath can be rebuilt.

Why video turns into blocks

Video codecs such as H.264 save space by splitting each frame into small squares and describing them cheaply, usually by copying from the previous frame and noting what changed. At a healthy bitrate you never notice. When the bitrate is too low for the amount of motion or detail, the encoder runs out of budget and the squares become visible. This is macroblocking.

It is worst in dark scenes, flat gradients such as skies, fast action, and on detail-heavy textures such as water, confetti or grass. It is also made worse by re-uploads: each platform re-encodes your file and the blocks from one round get baked in and compounded in the next.

The two kinds of blockiness

Not all blocks are equal. Banding is a flat, stepped look in gradients, where smooth colour turns into stripes. Macroblocking is a mosaic of visible squares that ignores the picture content. Deblocking filters handle the second well. For banding, adding a tiny amount of dither or grain during export can make it vanish.

Not all pixelation is compression

If blocks flash, smear coloured streaks or freeze, your file may be damaged rather than compressed. That needs a repair tool, not an enhancer. See repairing corrupted pixelated video.

How we remove them

First, a deblocking filter softens the visible edges of the squares so they stop looking like a grid. Then the AI restoration model looks at the cleaned frame and redraws the textures that the blocks were hiding: skin pores, leaves, the grain of a wall. The two stages together beat either alone, because the filter alone leaves a plastic look and the model alone can take a hard block edge for a real edge.

The preview lets you check that on your own footage. Look at a dark region and a flat sky: those are the areas where the difference is clearest.

Avoid blocks in the first place

If you control the export, you can avoid most of this. Use a bitrate that matches the resolution, choose two-pass or constant-quality encoding, and do not export from an already compressed file when the original exists. Upload to platforms at 1080p or higher, since they allocate more bitrate to higher resolutions. We cover this in detail in why videos look pixelated after exporting and which bitrate to pick.

How to tell if your video is too compressed

Check the file. A 1080p, 30 fps video that is only a few megabytes per minute almost always has blocks. For comparison, a healthy 1080p clip is usually around 40 to 80 MB per minute. Smaller than that and the encoder had to cut corners. Any media info tool shows the bitrate; under 3 Mbps for 1080p is a warning sign.

Knowing the number helps you decide whether to re-export (if you have the source) or restore (if you do not).

Special cases

Messaging apps and social platforms are the most aggressive compressors. A WhatsApp copy of a video is often a fraction of the original size, which is why it looks fine on a phone and awful on a laptop. If you can, ask for the original file. If you cannot, our tool is built for that situation. See fixing pixelated WhatsApp videos.

Do not just add blur

A common trick is to apply a light blur to hide blocks. It works for a second, and then the video looks smeared. Deblocking filters are smarter, since they only soften the block boundaries, and AI restoration then restores the lost texture.

Frequently asked questions

Is blockiness the same as pixelation?

Pixelation is a broader word. Blocky squares from compression are one type. Low resolution is another. We handle both.

Can I fix blocks in FFmpeg?

Light cases yes, with a deblock or hqdn3d filter. See our FFmpeg guide.

Will it remove banding?

It reduces it. Heavy banding in dark gradients may remain visible.
