How to fix a pixelated video on Android

Android phones vary a lot, but pixelated video tends to have the same few causes across Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, OnePlus and the rest. The camera app’s resolution setting, a messaging app’s compression, or a cloud backup that swapped your original for a smaller copy are the usual suspects.

Below is a checklist for both stopping the problem on new clips and cleaning up clips that are already damaged.

  • Free preview, no signup
  • Files auto-deleted after 24 hours
  • Corrupted files are repaired automatically

Why Android videos end up pixelated

Check these in order.

  • The camera is set to a low video size. Many phones default to FHD 30 fps, and some switch to HD to save battery in power-saving mode.
  • High efficiency or “efficient” video mode is on in a phone that you then edit on older software. The file plays blocky or green in apps without HEVC support.
  • Sending through SMS or MMS. Carriers cap MMS videos at a few megabytes, so they are crushed to roughly 240p to 480p.
  • Google Photos Storage saver. If you back up with Storage saver instead of Original quality, Google recompresses your video to save space, and the original on the phone can later be deleted by the “free up space” tool.
  • Heavy zoom, especially in low light, because the phone is enlarging a small crop and the denoiser smears the detail into blocks.

Camera settings to check

Open the camera, go to video mode and tap the video size button. Pick 4K 30 fps or FHD 30 fps. On Samsung, look under Settings, Advanced recording options. If you see High efficiency video, it saves space with similar quality, but turn it off if you share with older devices.

In Google Photos, open Settings, Backup, Backup quality, and choose Original quality if you care about preserving video detail. Then check that the clip you are viewing is not a downloaded smaller copy.

How to repair a pixelated Android video

  1. Find the best copyLook in the phone’s DCIM/Camera folder, then in Google Photos with Original quality, then ask the sender for a file transferred through Quick Share, Nearby Share, Drive or email as an attachment.
  2. Open this site in ChromeTap Choose a video. Android will let you pick from your gallery or the Files app.
  3. Wait for the previewA short clip usually finishes in under a minute. You will see a before and after comparison and a watermarked preview of the first 12 seconds.
  4. Unlock the full video if it looks betterThe full version exports up to 1080p with no watermark and keeps your audio.
  5. Share it the right waySend the fixed file via a cloud link or messaging app option labelled Document, Original or HD to avoid it being squashed again.

Try it on your own video

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Android video look good on the phone but bad on my computer?

The phone screen is small and hides blockiness. On a big monitor the same file reveals low bitrate, digital zoom and noise. The video quality is the same, but the display makes it obvious.

Why do videos sent by SMS look so bad?

MMS limits the file size to a few megabytes, so carriers or the phone shrink the video heavily. Use a chat app that supports sending as a file, or a cloud link.

Is Google Photos Storage saver lowering my video quality?

Yes. It recompresses videos to save space. Original quality keeps your file as recorded but counts against your storage.

Will the tool work with Samsung or Pixel videos?

Yes. MP4 and MOV files recorded by Android phones are supported, including HEVC. Portrait videos keep their orientation.
