How to fix pixelated WhatsApp videos

WhatsApp compresses every video you send in the normal way, so the copy the other person receives is usually much smaller and blockier than the original. Forwarding the same video again compresses it a second time, which is why old forwarded clips look so bad.

Send better quality in the first place

  • HD option: in recent versions of WhatsApp, the HD button appears when you pick a video to send. HD is still compressed, but less aggressively.
  • Send as Document: tap the attach icon, choose Document, and pick the video file. WhatsApp then sends it untouched, up to its file size limit.
  • Use a cloud link: Google Drive, iCloud or Dropbox links avoid compression entirely.
  • Avoid forwarding: ask the original sender for the file.

If you only have the WhatsApp copy

You cannot get the original quality back. You can remove the blocks, upscale it to a bigger size and sharpen it so it plays well on a larger screen. WhatsApp videos are typically around 480p to 720p with a low bitrate, so expect a clear improvement but not a miracle.

Frequently asked questions

Why are WhatsApp videos so blurry?

WhatsApp recompresses videos to keep them small and quick to send, which reduces resolution and bitrate.

Can I get the original quality back from a WhatsApp video?

No. Compression removes information permanently. You can clean it up and upscale it, but not restore the original.

How do I send a video on WhatsApp without losing quality?

Send it as a Document, or share a Drive or iCloud link. The HD toggle helps but is still compressed.

Is there a size limit?

Videos sent normally are limited to about 16 MB on many versions, documents allow much larger files, up to around 2 GB at the time of writing.
