Why your YouTube video looks pixelated, and how to upload it so it does not

If your video looks pixelated on YouTube, two completely different things might be going on: YouTube has not finished processing it yet, or you uploaded a file that was already low quality. The first fixes itself. The second needs a better upload.

Processing delay

After upload, YouTube first makes lower resolutions available and finishes HD and 4K later. For a few minutes to a few hours a perfectly good upload will only offer 360p or 480p, which looks pixelated. Check the quality menu in the player and wait.

Upload settings that help

Upload at the native resolution of your footage. YouTube recommends around 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rate and about 35 to 45 Mbps for 4K. Videos uploaded in 4K receive a higher quality encode, so some creators upscale 1080p to 4K before uploading. It helps a bit, especially on fast motion, and costs only render time.

Also check the player: if quality is on Auto and the viewer’s connection is weak, they will see a low resolution. Set it manually to 1080p to see what you actually uploaded.

Upload a clean video to YouTube

  1. Export at full resolutionUse H.264, the same resolution as your timeline and 12 to 16 Mbps for 1080p.
  2. Clean up weak footage firstRun low-quality clips through the fixer so YouTube does not compress the artifacts again.
  3. Upload and wait for HDDo not judge quality until HD or 4K processing is complete.
  4. Check on a few devicesCompare on phone and desktop, with quality set manually.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my YouTube video 360p after uploading?

HD versions are still processing. It normally resolves within minutes to hours.

Does upscaling to 4K help on YouTube?

It often improves how the video is encoded by YouTube, giving a cleaner result than 1080p uploads, though it is not a replacement for good source footage.

Which file format is best to upload?

MP4 with H.264 and AAC audio is a safe choice. YouTube also accepts MOV, WebM, AVI and others.

Why does a clean video still look pixelated on YouTube?

YouTube re-encodes everything. Dark, noisy or high-motion scenes suffer most. Denoising before upload helps.
