Where grain comes from
- High ISO in low light. The sensor amplifies a weak signal and the noise comes along.
- Small sensors. Phone and action camera sensors are tiny and noisy in the dark.
- Old tape and analog sources. VHS and camcorder footage has built-in chroma noise.
- Underexposure fixed in post. Brightening a dark clip lifts the noise with it.
Spatial versus temporal denoising
Spatial denoisers smooth each frame on its own. They are fast but can blur fine detail. Temporal denoisers compare neighboring frames, keep what is consistent, and discard what flickers. They preserve detail better on static shots but can ghost on fast motion.
A good pipeline uses both lightly. The pipeline here uses a high-quality 3D denoiser (hqdn3d) tuned by how damaged the source is, and keeps the strength modest to avoid the waxy look.
Reduce grain in video
- Upload the grainy clipThe tool measures bits per pixel to estimate how damaged the video is and selects a denoise strength.
- Compare a frameCheck skin tones and textures on the before-and-after slider. Detail should remain, grain should calm down.
- Check motionPlay the preview and watch fast movement for ghosting.
- Download the full versionThe finished file is re-encoded at a high bitrate so the grain does not return as blockiness.
Extra tips
- Shoot with more light or a lower ISO whenever you can.
- Expose to the right: a brighter exposure has less noise than a brightened dark one.
- Add a little grain back on purpose if the result looks too smooth.

Upload a videoFrequently asked questions
What is the best way to remove grain from a video?
A temporal denoiser used lightly, followed by gentle sharpening. Specialist plug-ins do this well, and so does a tuned FFmpeg chain.
Why does denoising make skin look plastic?
Strong denoising removes natural texture along with grain. Use a smaller strength and sharpen afterwards.
Is grain the same as pixelation?
No. Grain is random speckle. Pixelation is blocky squares from compression. They often appear together in dark compressed footage.
Can I fix grainy night footage?
Yes, to a degree. You will usually get a cleaner image, though very dark footage still has limited detail.
