Upscale video to 4K: when it is worth it, and when it is not

4K means 3840×2160 pixels. Upscaling a 1080p video to 4K gives you four times as many pixels, but not four times the detail. So why do people do it anyway? Because there are real reasons, and a few bad ones.

Good reasons to upscale to 4K

  • YouTube gives 4K uploads a better codec and bitrate than 1080p, so even upscaled videos often look cleaner after YouTube processes them.
  • A 4K TV or monitor will scale a 1080p picture anyway; a good upscale in advance can look better than the TV’s default scaler.
  • Editing with a 4K timeline lets you crop and punch in on 1080p footage without further softening.

Bad reasons

Hoping to turn a 360p clip into real 4K. It will not happen. The best you get is a cleaner, larger version of the same picture.

Expecting the file to be small. A 4K file needs 3x to 4x the bitrate of 1080p to look good.

Upscale to 4K the right way

  1. Start from the best sourceUse the highest-resolution, highest-bitrate original you have.
  2. Clean it firstRemove blocks and noise at the original size so enlargement does not magnify them.
  3. Upscale with a quality filterLanczos for natural material. AI models for faces and nature if the artifacts are minor.
  4. Export at high bitrateUse 35 to 50 Mbps for H.264 4K, or HEVC at about 60 percent of that.
  5. Check on a big screenLook at it at 100 percent before posting.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth upscaling 1080p to 4K?

For YouTube uploads and big-screen playback, often yes. For small screens, there is little visible gain.

Does this site export 4K?

The standard full render exports up to 1080p on the short side to keep processing fast. Contact us if you need 4K output for a project.

How much storage does 4K need?

Around 300 to 400 MB per minute at 45 Mbps.

Is AI upscaling better for 4K?

It can look better on textures, but needs a lot of processing power and can introduce artifacts.
