How to upscale a video to 1080p without it looking fake

Upscaling a 480p or 720p video to 1080p is easy. Making the result look good is the hard part. The enlargement algorithm matters, but what you do before and after the enlargement matters more.

Know the numbers

1080p means 1920×1080 pixels for a landscape video, and 1080×1920 for a portrait one. A 720p source (1280×720) is enlarged by 1.5x. A 480p source (854×480) by about 2.25x. The more you stretch, the less natural the result, so expect a gentler gain on very small sources.

Keep the aspect ratio. A 4:3 clip upscaled to 1080 high becomes 1440×1080. Stretching it to 1920×1080 distorts faces.

Filter choice

Bilinear is soft, bicubic is a decent default, Lanczos is sharper but can ring around edges, and AI models reconstruct texture but may look painted. This tool uses Lanczos with accurate rounding, then adaptive sharpening, and offers AI upscaling as an optional extra when enabled.

Frequently asked questions

Does upscaling to 1080p add detail?

Not real detail. It increases pixel count and with good filters makes the video look smoother and cleaner.

Can I upscale a 360p video to 1080p?

Yes, but the gain is limited because it is a 3x enlargement. Cleaning artifacts first helps most.

What is the best filter for upscaling video?

Lanczos is a strong general-purpose filter. AI models can produce more convincing texture on faces and nature.

Will the file be much bigger?

A 1080p export is usually larger than a 480p source, because it needs more bits to stay clean.
