Three kinds of blur
- Compression blur. The video was shrunk or re-encoded and lost fine detail. Blocks and mushy edges. Cleanup and sharpening help a lot here.
- Motion blur. The camera or subject moved during exposure, so detail is smeared along a direction. Mild motion blur can be reduced by sharpening; heavy blur cannot be reversed.
- Focus blur. The lens was focused on the wrong thing. Detail was never captured. Sharpening only adds contrast on the edges.
What sharpening can do
Unsharp masking and contrast-adaptive sharpening raise edge contrast so the video appears crisper. Done lightly, it makes a soft video feel cleaner. Overdone, it creates halos and exaggerates noise.
The best order is: remove blocking and noise, enlarge with a quality resampler, then sharpen last. Sharpening noise first just makes sharper noise.
What AI can do
AI upscalers learn what faces, text and textures typically look like and draw plausible detail. For faces and landscapes the result can look impressive, but it is an educated guess. Do not use AI sharpening on video that needs to be factually accurate, such as evidence.

- Let the pipeline clean itThe tool removes blocking and noise, upsizes with Lanczos resampling and applies adaptive sharpening.
- Compare before and afterDrag the slider on the result page to check sharpness and look for halos around edges.

Extra tips
- Shoot with more light and faster shutter speed to avoid blur in the first place.
- If the video is shaky, stabilize it before sharpening.

Upload a videoFrequently asked questions
Can you really unblur a video?
You can reduce compression blur and mild softness. You cannot recover detail that was never recorded, such as heavy motion blur or a severely out-of-focus shot.
Is there a free way to unblur video?
The preview here is free and shows the improvement on the first 12 seconds. FFmpeg is also free if you are comfortable with the command line.
Does AI unblur better than sharpening?
For faces and textures, AI often looks better. It also invents detail, so it is not suitable for forensic use.
Why does sharpening make my video look worse?
Too much sharpening amplifies noise and creates halos. Apply less, and denoise first.
