How to fix pixelated video in Final Cut Pro

Final Cut Pro makes it easy to confuse a performance setting with a quality problem. The viewer is designed to drop quality when your Mac is struggling, so a blocky preview does not always mean a blocky export.

Viewer settings

Open the View menu in the viewer and set Playback to Better Quality. If you are using proxy media, change Playback to Optimized/Original rather than Proxy Preferred. Proxy files are intentionally low resolution, and they make everything look pixelated on screen.

Share settings

Use File, Share, Master File and choose H.264 Better Quality for a general purpose export, or Apple ProRes for further editing. If you use a social preset like YouTube & Facebook, check the resolution is set to the project size. Exporting at 720p is a common cause of blockiness.

When you scale up lower-resolution footage inside Final Cut, set Spatial Conform to Fit or Fill rather than None if you want the clip enlarged smoothly, and avoid scaling beyond 120 percent for sharp results.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Final Cut Pro video blurry in the viewer?

The viewer can switch to Better Performance or proxy playback. Change it to Better Quality and use original media.

What is the best export format in Final Cut Pro?

ProRes for archiving and further editing, H.264 Better Quality for sharing.

Does Final Cut Pro upscale well?

It resamples cleanly, but it cannot add detail. For old or low-resolution footage, an additional cleanup pass makes a visible difference.

Do optimized media files improve quality?

They improve editing performance and are visually equal to the original for most footage.
